{"id":181,"date":"2016-11-14T19:30:24","date_gmt":"2016-11-14T19:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nestegginvestments.co.nz\/?p=181"},"modified":"2016-11-14T19:30:24","modified_gmt":"2016-11-14T19:30:24","slug":"us-election-over-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nestegginvestments.co.nz\/index.php\/2016\/11\/14\/us-election-over-it\/","title":{"rendered":"US Election: Over it."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-182 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/nestegginvestments.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/bored-tiger-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"bored-tiger\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nestegginvestments.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/bored-tiger-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nestegginvestments.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/bored-tiger-768x521.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nestegginvestments.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/bored-tiger.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">I\u2019m over the US election.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">I think many people are.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">But I couldn\u2019t escape my financial adviser obligation to post a final blog to wrap it all up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">President Trump (OK, President Elect Trump).<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">How many people on this side of the Pacific predicted that?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Well, I for one was shocked at the outcome.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">To be fair, pretty much everyone I speak to and am in contact with was also surprised and shocked to some degree.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">The other thing that I have been highly surprised about has been the relatively turmoil-free reaction of most of the world\u2019s financial markets, post election.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">To a large extent, equity markets have moved on from election day and traded within what I would describe as \u201cnormal\u201d ranges eg. US, Australia markets up ~1%, NZ market down ~2%.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">I was certainly expecting much greater volatility, especially in the short term, and I was not alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">The turmoil may still come(!), but right now this is yet another reminder that it is very difficult to forecast how markets will react to any given event, and so in my view it\u2019s best not to try.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">As I\u2019ve noted previously, timing the market is very hard to do successfully.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">So why did markets react as they did?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Well, with the benefit of hindsight, markets took a fairly pragmatic view of a Trump presidency (as opposed to many predictions of a hysterical reaction).<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">On the economic front, there are as many positives as negatives.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Policies of lower corporate taxes and boosting infrastructure spending are seen as positive &#8211; for the US economy in particular.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">There are negatives too \u2013 greater US protectionism may lead to higher prices in the medium term, and with it increased inflation and higher interest rates.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">And anti-free trade policies could curb global growth and hurt trading nations like NZ.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">But perhaps the biggest factor in the markets not tanking on a Trump victory was the conciliatory tone he struck on election night and afterwards.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">He didn\u2019t gloat, talked of the importance of coming together, and was fulsome in his praise for both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">This came as a stark contrast to his rhetoric during the election campaign, and sent a signal that a Trump presidency may be less divisive and more pragmatic than many feared.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">It was a relief for markets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">We may never see another US Election quite like this one, and it will be fascinating to see how the Trump presidency plays out over the coming months and years.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">But I have reached saturation point with the US election.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">I\u2019m pleased the sun is still rising each morning, and I\u2019m pleased it\u2019s over. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">J<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Dean Edwards<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m over the US election.\u00a0\u00a0 I think many people are.\u00a0 But I couldn\u2019t escape my financial adviser obligation to post a final blog to wrap it all up.
